Fever is the body\u2019s normal response to an infection. These infections are usually caused by a virus, sometimes also by bacteria. Fever can also occur as a result of vaccinations. Fever does no harm and won\u2019t hurt your baby. Fever will usually go away after a few days. The best way to measure a fever is with an ear thermometer. Temperature is best measured via the anus when using a normal thermometer. Body temperature fluctuates throughout the day. That\u2019s why it\u2019s recommended to choose one fixed time of the day to measure the temperature.<\/p>\n"},{"title":"Which symptoms can I expect if my baby has a fever?","content":"<p>How your baby feels and behaves is more important to your GP than the level of the fever. A baby with a fever will often act completely out of character and you\u2019ll just know something isn\u2019t right.<\/p>\n<p>Your baby may also have a febrile seizure as a result of the high temperature. Please refer to our page about febrile seizures.<\/p>\n<p>Babies will often have the following symptoms:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Listless<\/li>\n<li>Tired (your baby may be difficult to wake up)<\/li>\n<li>Crying a lot<\/li>\n<li>Coughing<\/li>\n<li>Shortness of breath<\/li>\n<li>Audible breathing<\/li>\n<li>Rapid breathing<\/li>\n<li>Looking pale<\/li>\n<li>Drinking less<\/li>\n<li>Urinating less<\/li>\n<li>Vomiting<\/li>\n<li>Diarrhoea<\/li>\n<li>Earache<\/li>\n<li>Sore throat<\/li>\n<li>Spots<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n"},{"title":"What can I do myself when my baby has a fever?","content":"<p>This is what you can do yourself:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You don&#8217;t need to lower the temperature if your baby has a fever<\/li>\n<li>It also won\u2019t matter if your baby doesn\u2019t want to eat for a few days. His or her appetite will come back on its own<\/li>\n<li>But do make sure your baby drinks plenty. Regularly offer your baby small amounts of water<\/li>\n<li>Your baby can do everything they normally do. There\u2019s no need to leave your baby in bed<\/li>\n<li>It\u2019s not necessary to dress your baby warmly. Don\u2019t cover your child too warmly either. You can temporarily cover up your baby a little bit extra if he or she starts to shiver<\/li>\n<li>It\u2019s important to give your baby pain relief with paracetamol if he or she has pain symptoms, like a sore throat or earache<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Do pay careful attention to the dosage if you give your baby paracetamol. The maximum dose depends on your baby\u2019s weight and age. Please refer to the package leaflet for the maximum dose. Never give your baby more than the maximum dose.<\/p>\n"},{"title":"When should I go and see the doctor if my baby has a fever?","content":"<p>You should always call your GP if your baby is younger than 3 months and has a fever. If your baby is older than 3 months, you should call your GP if your baby has a fever AND one of the following applies to your baby:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Not easy to wake up<\/li>\n<li>Inconsolable<\/li>\n<li>Short of breath or noticeable rapid breathing<\/li>\n<li>Is becoming increasingly unwell within a matter of hours<\/li>\n<li>Has spots you don&#8217;t trust<\/li>\n<li>Is drinking less than half the usual amount<\/li>\n<li>Is vomiting a lot<\/li>\n<li>Often has diarrhoea<\/li>\n<li>Has pain when urinating<\/li>\n<li>You don\u2019t recognise your own baby and you have a strong suspicion something isn\u2019t right<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n"}],"original_post_id":"2_85","disable_sync":false},"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v26.6 -
